put a spell on you

My heart is torn between East and West. I live somewhere between the present and the past. I don't know who I am.

Just another human being biding their time on this earth. Passionate about current affairs, history, politics (particularly MENA region), religion, cute animals and food. Posts are mainly in English but I may post in Arabic/French/Turkish.

Star Gazing at Crater Lake, Oregon, USA

“Here on my first time visit to Crater Lake National Park, I wanted to leave with an image that I could look back on and remember the experience. I was with a friend taking pictures also, and before I took the picture, I called over to him and said, “Hey man, watch this!” With a laugh, I spread my arms out and fell backwards into the snow. A second later, the camera timer clicked the shutter and the long exposure began. After the shutter clicked back closed, I stayed on the ground for a good while staring up mesmerized by all the sparkling stars overhead.”

Nujood Ali, Yemen

Nujood Ali was ten when she fled her abusive, much older husband and took a taxi to the courthouse in Sanaa, Yemen. The girl’s courageous act—and the landmark legal battle that ensued—turned her into an international heroine for women’s rights. Now divorced, she is back home with her family and attending school again.”

Manhattanhenge, Manhattan, New York, USA

“Capturing a slice of Stonehenge on the Hudson, sun worshipers snap pictures on the so-called Manhattan solstice, when the sun’s rays align with the island’s east-west street grid. (See a picture of the solar alignment during a summer solstice at England’s ancient Stonehenge monument.)”

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Angers, Anjou, France

I took this shot in Angers France where the new tramway has just been inaugurated. Waiting at one of the stops I saw a pigeon perched on one of the tramway wires with a plane making its way across the blue sky.”

Stuck in Traffic, Mumbai, India

The photo shows a string of taxis stuck in traffic in Mumbai, gleaming in warm afternoon sun. The shot was taken from inside a taxi as well. I particularly liked the way the taxis lined up nicely and that one of the drivers looked outside to get a breath of “fresh” air. I wanted to capture the difficulty of moving around Mumbai.”

Touch down, Luxor, Egypt

“As soon as the balloons came close to landing the local children started following them. The juxtaposition of ancient animal transport and modern tourist balloon a few feet away was too good to miss. It was an awkward shot as I was in a balloon myself, but for a second or two everything was in the right position.”

Lines and reflections, Bruges, Belgium

This was taken near Bruges, Belgium, when I was backpacking through Europe. We were travelling through the countryside on our way to the war cemeteries and Ypres. I couldn’t resist the lines and the reflections…’

JORDAN: Bedouin men sing and play instruments around a campfire in Wadi Rum, a stark span of desert in southwestern Jordan. Many Arabs see their origins in Bedouin culture, which centers on movement and still provides a way of life for pockets of people throughout the Middle East.

Skateistan: To Live And Skate in Kabul

A beautifully shot film that follows the lives of a group of young skateboarders in Afghanistan. Operating against the backdrop of war and bleak prospects, the Skateistan charity project is the world’s first co-educational skateboarding school, where a team of international volunteers work with girls and boys between the ages of 5 and 17, an age group largely untouched by other aid programmes. Watch it on youtube here.
